There are many diverse types of therapies and psychological counselors today. Why should a person seek to be counseled by a Biblical counselor?
God created us and knows what is best for us.
Biblical counseling makes sense because God created us and knows what is best for us. He knows all our needs from our biggest challenge to our smallest worry, and He alone can help us to be what He created us to be. Only by living God’s way can we have true peace and joy.
God alone has perfect wisdom, perfect character, and ability.
God is omnipotent [all-powerful], omniscient [all-knowing], and omnipresent [present in all places]. God is not only all that, but God is steadfast in His love. John, Jesus’ closest disciple tells us, “God is love (1 John 4:8 NIV).” God is holy, perfectly just, and overflowing with mercy and kindness.
Not only is God all-wise, all-loving, and all-powerful, but in His mercy, He sent His Son Jesus Christ to pay for our sins so that we can have eternal life, and to empower us to live godly lives. “But God demonstrates His love for us in this, while we were still sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8 NIV).”
When we consider the character and attributes of God, wouldn’t it make sense to go to Him and His Word, the Bible, for guidance and help? Only God can truly deal with the biggest issues of our lives, and God speaks to us through His word.
God's Word alone is sufficient.
King David tells us in Psalm 19 (ESV) that God’s Word is “perfect, reviving the soul (v. 7).” “It is sure, making wise the simple (v. 8).” It is “right rejoicing the heart,” and “pure enlightening the eyes (9).” “True and altogether righteous (v. 11).” In keeping with what He says, “There is great reward (v. 7).”
Biblical counseling is God and Bible dependent.
A Biblical counselor trusts in the sufficiency of God’s Word. Therefore, he endeavors to help individuals who are struggling with various issues in life. He teaches what God has to say about their lives and situations, and in doing so, he helps the counselee move forward in dealing with their problems in a manner that pleases God. The Apostle Paul tells us, “All Scripture is God breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16 NIV).”
Biblical counseling affirms that all human beings are created in the image of God; therefore, you have great value and dignity (Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 139). However, because of sin, that image is marred. The Biblical counselor’s goal is to help people with their immediate problems as well as to help them to deal biblically and decisively with future issues.
Those are the reasons South Bay Bible Church believes in and offers Biblical counseling. God’s word alone helps people understand their problems and deal with them in a way that pleases God, and in doing so, will ultimately lead to the greatest joy and peace in life.
