Happy New Year! I hope everyone is enjoying the fresh start of 2020. This post is for the many of us that need to renew our health insurance annually on January 1. Hopefully, this post will help you save money on your health insurance as it did for Kimberly and myself!
As Christians, we are called to “one another” each another, i.e. help one another, love one another, forgive one another, encourage one another, pray for one another, and 25 other one anothers.
While many of us have the best intention to follow all of Jesus’ one another commands, we often do not apply these commands to what we do with our finances.
We often simply do what we are told by society.
Take healthcare, for example. Many Jesus-following Christians have concerns about the Affordable Care Act, and we don’t even realize there is a God-honoring option, called Medi-Share.
What is Medi-Share?
Medi-Share is a branch of the Christian Care Ministry formed with an aim to follow the Acts 2 and 4 models of the early church.
Like the early church, Medi-Share members share one another’s healthcare needs in an effort to live out their Christian beliefs.
With Medi-Share, the funds members contribute are shared among members when there is a healthcare need.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
– Acts 2:42-47
How Does it Work?
Medi-Share is not insurance; it is a not-for-profit ministry.
With an extensive nationwide network of providers and 400,000+ Christian members, Medi-Share is a respected organization.
As such, members benefit from a special provision in the law making them exempt from purchasing health insurance.
As a ministry, members contribute a monthly share amount.
This shared amount is not for your own medical bills; instead, the shared amount is given to other members in need.
Each member’s monthly share amount depends on their age, the number of share household members, and your annual household portion.
Your annual household portion (AHP) is the amount you agree to pay for your own medical bills (like a deductible in the insurance world) before other members share with you.
Medi-Share offers several annual household portions, which allows members to choose the AHP that works best for their budget.
Once you’ve met your AHP, your medical bills are shared by other members.
Why is Medi-Share a God-Honoring Program?
There are many reasons why Medi-Share honors God, but here are just a few of the reasons:
- Medi-Share focuses on helping one another rather than a means to profit.
- Medi-Share encourages prayer for other members as you share their medical burdens.
- Medi-Share utilizes faith-based rules as members are required to sign a statement of faith to abstain from certain sinful habits, which improves health.
- Medi-Share covers qualified adoption and funeral expenses.
Medi-Share is a community of like-minded believers who are there for one another to encourage one another, pray for one another, and carry one another’s burdens.
How Does Medi-Share Promote Good Stewardship?
Medi-Share helps Christians practice good stewardship, as we are called to do.
We should spend our money wisely, and with Medi-Share, you can trust that your money is being used to glorify God.
For example, your share dollars will never be used to pay for non-Biblical procedures.
Plus, members save a significant amount of money by joining Medi-Share in comparison to traditional health insurance programs.
There are not any high co-pays or deductibles. Medi-Share claims there is no bill too big to be shared.
By saving money through Medi-Share, you are being good stewards of what God has given you by helping others.
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
– 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
My Personal Experience with Medi-Share
Several years ago, Kimberly and I joined Christian Care Ministry as Medi-Share members.
We were skeptical at first; however, they have proven to be very reliable and Christian in their dealings.
The biggest benefit Kimberly and I have received in doing healthcare God’s way is the cost savings. It's about one-third of the price we were paying in the state health exchange.
We also joined Manna, which is their disability sharing program.
Manna, is a fraction of the cost of a traditional disability insurance policy.
I love that profit from the system is removed, and we help other Christians who are struggling to pay their bills.
