 Addictions_A_Banquet_in_the_Grave.jpg

Addictions: A Banquet in the Grace by Edward T. Welch

A worship disorder: this is how Edward T. Welch views addictions. "Will we worship our own desires or will we worship the true God?" With this lens the author discovers far more in Scripture on addictions than passages on drunkenness. There we learn the addict's true condition: like guests at a banquet thrown by "the woman Folly," he is already in the grave (Proverbs 9:13-18). Can we not escape our addictions? If we're willing to follow Jesus, the author says that we have "immense hope: hope in God's forgiving grace, hope in God's love that is faithful even when we are not, and hope that God can give power so that we are no longer mastered by the addiction." Each chapter concludes with "Practical Theology," "As Your Face Your Own Addictions," and "As You Help Someone Else."

 Follow_Me.jpg

Follow Me by David Platt

What did Jesus really mean when he said, “Follow Me”? In this new book, David Platt, author of the New York Times bestselling book, Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream, contends that multitudes of people around the world culturally think they are Christians yet biblically are not followers of Christ.

Scores of men, women, and children have been told that becoming a follower of Jesus simply involves believing certain truths or saying certain words. As a result, churches today are filled with people who believe they are Christians . . . but aren’t. We want to be disciples as long as doing so does not intrude on our lifestyles, our preferences, our comforts, and even our religion. Revealing a biblical picture of what it means to truly be a Christian, Follow Me explores the gravity of what we must forsake in this world, as well as the indescribable joy and deep satisfaction to be found when we live for Christ. The call to follow Jesus is not simply an invitation to pray a prayer; it’s a summons to lose your life―and to find new life in him. This book will show you what such life actually looks like.

 Idols_of_the_Heart.jpg

Idols of the Heart by Elyse Fitzpatrick

Have you ever seen a Buddhist temple or walked through a museum exhibit filled with statues of gods? We tend to think of idols as something outside us. They're something foreign, something we take pictures of in far-off temples of museums, something we wonder at. But God's Word tells us that idolatry is something more than temples, incense, and food offerings. Idolatry has to do with love—our love for God, our love for others, and our love for the world. When we look at idolatry in these ways, we understand that we're not so different from those people we observe in temples so far away. Elyse Fitzpatrick helps us to examine the idols of our hearts and, ultimately, to pursue godly lives free from the habitual sins that trap us. When our affections are turned to Jesus Christ, he can once again reign in our hearts.

How does the Jesus of the New Testament compare to the “new, rediscovered” Jesus—or even the Jesus we think we know so well? Philip Yancey offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work—his teachings, his miracles, his death and resurrection—and ultimately, who he was and why he came. From the manger in Bethlehem to the cross in Jerusalem, Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to radically transform your life and stretch your faith. The Jesus I Never Knew uncovers a Jesus who is brilliant, creative, challenging, fearless, compassionate, unpredictable, and ultimately satisfying. “No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same,” says Yancey. “Jesus has rocked my own preconceptions and has made me ask hard questions about why those of us who bear his name don’t do a better job of following him.”

He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard.
